Summer meadows, dappled sunlight and a bespoke bridal gown that dreams are made of. Sounds like a fairytale right? Well the wedding of Sarah and Gareth truly is folks. An eclectic mix of femininity, copper accents and mother nature.

You would be hard pushed to find a more beautiful backdrop than Llangoed Hall in Wales, the gardens are something truly special, as is the choice of fashion and florals. And did I mention Sarah’s shoes?! lovely Louboutin silver strappy court shoes, as perfect for the Honeymoon as they were for the big day.

Enjoy, I know I certainly did.

Sarah The Bride: Gareth and I were both born and raised in South Wales, met in London, and then moved to Singapore in 2011. The day Gareth proposed, we both decided that we definitely wanted to get married in the beautiful countryside of Wales!

The Brides Fashion & Accessories

I must have tried on at least 50 wedding dresses, but I never had the “this is the one” moment. So five months before the wedding, I decided to have my dream dress custom made by Olive Suites Bridal. I really wanted it to be in separates as I loved the idea of wearing the pieces again for special occasions and anniversaries. My bodice had a low back and spaghetti straps, with ivory corded lace on top of ivory Chantilly lace, which was then hand beaded and 3D appliquéd. The ivory silk chiffon skirt had a matching lace waist band, and a front centre split (with some shorts underneath to protect my bridal modesty in case of strong gusts of wind!).

I added some subtle pops of colour with a pale grey-blue grosgrain ribbon at the waist bowed at the back, gold Christian Louboutins, pale green jade drop earrings, and my “old, borrowed and blue” was my Bridesmaid’s beautiful sapphire bracelet.

For the evening reception (and ill-practiced first dance!), I changed into a simple white cap sleeved knee length dress from ASOS.

The Grooms Attire

Gareth’s go-to place for a sharp, custom suit is Suits Supply in London. He chose a beige narrow lapel suit, with a double breasted waistcoat, a mint green diagonal stripe seersucker skinny silk tie, a green silk handkerchief, classic walnut brown brogues from church’s and a brown Prada leather belt I bought for him as part of his wedding gift.

The Venue

Llangoed Hall  is situated in the beautiful Wye Valley and Brecon Beacons National Park. Its immaculate, picture perfect grounds included a fantastic lawn, a maze and rose and wild flower gardens.  The house itself was restored by the late Bernard Ashley (husband of Laura Ashley), with a luxe country, cosy homely feel.

Llangoed Hall allowed all elements of our wedding day to take place on one site.  Our humanist ceremony took place on the lawn under the shade of the trees, the civil ceremony took place inside in the morning room, and the wedding breakfast and evening reception took place in a clear roof marquee. Luckily the rain cleared up just before the ceremony, and the rest of the day was warm and sunny.

Theme/Colour Scheme/Decor

We were aiming for a luxe garden outdoor theme, with a Welsh and Vietnamese flavour to reflect our heritage!  The ceremony took place on the lawn, and we created an outdoor lounge with a classic leather Chesterton sofa, French chateau chairs and rugs on the grass. The wedding breakfast continued the outdoorsy feel under the clear roof marquee, with a Welsh and Vietnamese fusion menu. Wedding favours were mini bottles of Penderyn Welsh whiskey and gin, and Fortnum & Mason mint chocolates (which unfortunately melted as it was so warm!). The evening reception also took place in the marquee, with the hope that it would feel like we were dancing under the stars. The dance floor was lit up with 4ft high retro illuminated initials of our surnames (supplied by Aisle Hire It) to show that the day wasn’t just about us getting married, but also about our two families coming together.

We are so grateful for our amazing wedding party and friends, who helped with the last minute wedding preparations. This included setting the copper farm animal place card holders, hanging up glass baubles and tea lights in the marquee, and arranging our outdoor lounge furniture.

Our personalised wedding invitation was beautifully illustrated by Shhh My Darling. This introduced our theme, depicted our portraits within the gardens of Llangoed Hall and used our wedding colour scheme of mint green, blush and touches of rose gold and copper. We’re so very grateful to Sophie, my Sister/Bridesmaid, and her partner Alex for completing the wedding stationery suite, complementing the illustrated invitation.

Our wonderful florists Flowers by Becca Jane did a great job styling our garden wooden arch (built by my Brother) with white hydrangea plants, urns, pillars, trees, wooden crates and logs.  The long wedding breakfast tables were decorated with green moss table runners, with hundreds of little copper, silver and glass vases filled with an assortment of wild flowers and mini potted succulents.

My bouquet was a variety of pastel David Austen roses, Avalanche and Amnesia roses, white waxflowers, Brunia – some of which were spray painted copper, other wild flowers and succulents. Gareth’s boutonnière included a Peach Avalanche rose, succulents, and grey and copper Brunia. My Bridesmaids’ bouquets were ivory flowers, Brunia and soft green foliage to complement their mint green dresses.

My three beautiful Bridesmaids wore gorgeous (and practical) full length mint green convertible dresses.  They chose neck lines to suit their individual style, and mixed their own jewellery with statement pieces that I had selected. This was finished with nude / rose gold shoes. My flower girl and niece, Kasumi wore a simple pale pink dress from Zara, ballet pumps and a gypsophila head circlet / crown.

Gareth’s three Best Men and Usher wore their own well fitting “mis-matched” suits. This was inspired by a few wedding blogs and Pinterest pictures, and we absolutely loved this relaxed look to the wedding party. The guys then accessorised their suits with the same mint seersucker ties and silk handkerchiefs worn by Gareth.

Richard Patterson, our charismatic Humanist celebrant, expertly personalised the ceremony with reflections of fond memories, and entertaining audience participation (including asking our guests to say congratulations in both Welsh and Vietnamese!).

There were also a few funny mishaps, such as when Richard announced “…you may now kiss!”, followed by Gareth and I realising that we had not yet gotten around to exchanging rings! I then attempted to put Gareth’s wedding ring on his right hand – I am still cringing!

Also, at the beginning of the ceremony, the cows in the adjacent field were quite intrigued with our brass quartet music, and decided to gatecrash proceedings. We thank the cows for sticking around to witness our big day!

The Gold Diggers, a New Orleans style brass quartet, played our processional (“Pure imagination”) and recessional (Michael Jackson’s “Love never felt so good”) songs and then continued with pop songs during the cocktail reception. For the evening, the fantastic Soul Miners, a Welsh, seven piece soul band, fulfilled their promise of a never empty dance-floor. We wish the night never ended!    During wedding planning, we came across a blogged slow motion booth video. It looked like so much fun, so we discussed this with our videographer Ben Walton who was very keen to set up. This was great evening entertainment, our guests really enjoyed taking part, and it got very messy to say the least!

Food was a very important part of the day for us.  After the ceremony, local Welsh beer and Mr & Mrs cocktails were served: a whiskey sour and a pear mojito, with beautiful canapés. For the main menu, Nick Brody, the Head Chef at Llangoed Hall, created an absolutely amazing bespoke fine dining menu for us, and the food on the day was beyond perfect. We were especially pleased with the dessert which we named “Mekong-Taff Mess”, and was our version of a Vietnamese and Welsh fusion Eton Mess. It included pieces of welsh cake, and a tropical Mango coulis!

Our beautiful wedding cake was made by Scrumdiddly in South Wales.  The wedding colours were perfectly incorporated with hand sculpted sugar flowers and succulents. We opted to have a trio of cakes, the main cake being two tiers, and then two single tiers of carrot cake, red velvet, Lemon with poppy seed, and an orange and coconut cake with fresh blueberries.

Craig & Eva were so incredibly wonderful. Not only did we love their soft, whimsical, warm romantic photography style and aesthetic, we loved their energetic and fun personalities, which made us feel comfortable and at ease. They were also very discreet, we barely noticed them snapping away, and they were able to capture some really great candid shots.  Craig & Eva have such a great eye for detail and we couldn’t be any happier with our wedding photographs.

We came across Ben Walton Films as a recommended videographer on Rock My Wedding. After seeing his previous works, we knew we had to have him film our big day. We loved his energetic cinematic technique and style of filming. Like Craig & Eva, Ben was very discreet and we barely noticed him at work. His slow motion video booth at the evening reception was also so much fun to take part in, and it was even more fun to watch!

Final Thoughts

Our wedding was the best day of our lives, and we were so happy to share the day with our closest friends and family. We love looking back at all the lovely photos and videos of our friends and family having a great time with us. Looking back, we found that during the wedding planning, the wealth of wedding inspiration ideas available was amazing (including the fantastic Rock My Wedding!), however we then ended up with far TOO many ideas. In hindsight, we do think that we should have just focused on the absolute must have details, and then we would of had more time to relax! All of the details were personal to us, and as a result, some elements ended up being quite untraditional. This was fine by us, as we just had to keep reminding ourselves that it was our big day, and we could do whatever we wanted to do! So we did just that, and are so pleased with how everything came together.

How completely beautiful. Llangoed and the surrounding countryside is so beautiful but I’ve never seen it look as perfect as this. The colour palette is to die for and I just want to cover my home in moss and copper now!
